[FLASH-USERS] Request Tutorial

Hi Siyu and Dr. Portillo,

I'm excited to hear you're designing simulations in FLASH! And, I'm sorry
to hear you're running into obstacles. I'll see what I can do to help you
get back in the fast lane.

Chapter 3 of the user guide (*Setting up new problems) *is quite detailed,
but it may be easy to miss the big picture. In my experience, the simplest
way to learn how to make a new simulation is to base it off of one of the
included example simulations, which are located in .../source/Simulation/
SimulationMain.

My advice is to do two things in parallel: *1) *Read through Chapter 3, and *2)
*Read through the corresponding simulation files of an example related to
what you're trying to create. Also, *3) *Have a Fortran90 reference handy.

Let's say I want to create a laser-plasma simulation, but I don't know how
to start. In this case, I'll look at a related example, the "LaserSlab"
simulation (examine the files under .../SimulationMain/LaserSlab). By the
time I finish reading Ch. 3, all the while investigating the files of
"LaserSlab", I will have the knowledge to make a completely new simulation.

As an example, here's how you could make a modified version of the
"LaserSlab" simulation. Copy the .../SimulationMain/LaserSlab directory and
its contents into a new subfolder:
(e.g. .../SimulationMain/ScottSlab)

When you're done editing the files, you can build it just like any of the
examples, with:
./setup -auto ScottSlab [options]

Let me know how this works! I'll also ask around the Flash Center to see if
any basic tutorial currently exists. And, if anyone has already made a
tutorial that you'd like to share, let us know!

Best,

Scott
