[FLASH-USERS] LaserSlab configuration: Value of SUMY variable in gas chamber

Your understanding of SUMY is correct. Are you sure that there is any CHAM species left in the domain? The laserslab problem pretty quickly ablates enough target to push out all of the chamber species.
