ONGOING - Postdoctoral Scholar in Computational High Energy Density Physics
The Flash Center for Computational Science in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at The University of Rochester invites applications for a Postdoctoral Scholar position in computational high energy density physics (HEDP), with emphasis on the design and interpretation of HEDP experiments using simulations with FLASH, a highly capable multi-physics numerical simulation community code developed by the Center.

The Flash Center is leading, co-leading, or participating in a variety of astrophysically-motivated HEDP experiments at the LULI2000 laser facility in Paris, France; the Vulcan laser facility at the Rutherford-Appleton Laboratory in the UK; the French Laser Megajoule (LMJ) at Bordeaux; the Omega laser facility at the Laboratory for Laser Energetics at the University of Rochester; and the National Ignition Facility at Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory. The Postdoctoral Scholar will take an active role in designing and interpreting these experiments using validated FLASH simulations; interact and collaborate with scientists at national labs and academia; write research papers and reports and present them at conferences and meetings; and assist with Flash Center proposals to funding agencies. This is for an initial one-year appointment, with a renewal for a second year and the possibility of renewal for a third year.

Candidates must have completed the requirements for a PhD in a related field at the time of appointment (astrophysics, physics, engineering, applied mathematics, computational science) and substantial experience in programming and numerical methods. Experience in HEDP is highly desirable. Good communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are also highly desirable.

Applicants must apply directly to the Flash Center for Computational Science. Please email a cover letter; a curriculum vitae, including a list of publications; a description of research interests; and three letters of reference. Electronic submissions are preferred. Please refer to Postdoctoral Scholar position in Computational HEDP in email subject line.

ONGOING - Graduate Students
The Flash Center for Computational Science in the Department of Physics and Astronomy at the University of Rochester invites perspective graduate students with interests in computational high energy density physics (HEDP), computational fluid dynamics, and computational astrophysics, to apply to the Center. Students with aligned interests from Mechanical Engineering and Applied Mathematics are also encouraged to seek more information.

Graduate students will be expected to participate in the broader goals of the Flash Center as well as all departmental expectations. Students will be trained in high performance computing (HPC), best coding practices and numerical methods relevant to the science goals of student driven projects through close collaboration with the diverse expertise of the Flash Center members including fellow students, postdocs, research scientists and faculty (link to people). In addition, students will have the opportunity to work closely with the many teams whom the center collaborates with both inside the USA and abroad.

The Flash Center frequently collaborates with the Laboratory for Laser Energetics (LLE), Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory (LLNL), Los Alamos National Laboratory (LANL), Sandia National Laboratories (SNL), several university teams from around the world, as well as and private sector entities.

Candidates are encouraged to apply to the University of Rochester Department of Physics and Astronomy here. Due to the collaborative nature of the Flash Center's work, effective communication skills and the ability to work in a team environment are highly valued.
